Determining the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL)
In accordance with Australian Standard AS 3959-2009

AS3959-2009 has various limitation based around the slope of the land within 100m to say
approximately 140m from the building envelope
Simplified Procedure for determining the BAL - Method 1
Can only be used where the slope under classifiable vegetation is equal to or less than
20 degrees downslope.
Detailed Method for determining the BAL - Method 2
(Appendix B)
Method 2 is a complex methodology and can be used for steeper sites where the slope under
classifiable vegetation is equal to or less than 30 degrees downslope.
Method 2 also has a limitation where the slope between the house site and the classifiable
vegetation is equal to or less than 20 degrees regardless of slope type ie upslope or downslope.
The reason why the slope of the land between the site and the classified vegetation is limited to
20 degrees is that the establishment and maintenance of the setback between the site and
the vegetation may become impractical when the slope of the land between the site and the classified
vegetation is over 20 degrees.
We have a few ideas regarding of how to handle this limit; nothing guaranteed however ring us to discuss.
We have specific equipment to measure the slope.
